Measure where it matters: at the Uhle boxes

The vacuum available at the Uhle box can differ tremendously from the vacuum produced by the pump.

Piping, (contaminated) valves, and other consumers connected to the same system will influence the vacuum at every position. Therefore, if you want to check the vacuum at the Uhle boxes there is only one place to measure.

Set the vacuum

The Feltest RealVac is also a very helpful tool to set the vacuum valve on-site when there is no fixed manometer located nearly.

With the Feltest RealVac it is easy to compare the vacuum on both tender and drive side of the machine. Several factors can cause differences between the vacuum on both sides, like contamination inside the uhle box, but also piping lay-out and location of the valve.

FAQ's

Frequently asked questions about Feltest's portable Uhle-box vacuum manometer:

The RealVac is basically a portable manometer with an extension, to measure inside the uhle (or felt suction) box. It comes standard with a metrical Bourdon-type manometer (0 to -100 kPa), but you can also order it without the manometer and use your own manometer with a R 1/8”connection.
Normally, the press felt covers the full open area of the uhle box (to avoid loss of vacuum). The tip of the RealVac has been designed in a way that you can easily lift the felt a bit and then enter the vacuum zone to measure the true vacuum in the suction box.
To be able to enter the vacuum zone, you need to lift the press felt a little, as shown in this picture. In the forming section, the sheet lays on the fabric and lifting the forming fabric would destroy the sheet. Therefore, the RealVac can only be used in the press section.
That is no problem, you can attach any manometer as long as it has an R 1/8” connection. So can use your own manometer in PSI, or mmHG, or any other unit.

Although the RealVac was originally designed for slotted uhle boxes, it can also be used with modern drilled uhle boxes. The probe is 8 mm | 1/3” thick, so it will be easy to enter one of the holes closer to the edge.
